The original swimming pool, no longer adequate in environmental terms or competition dimensions, is replaced by a new 25 metre, 6 lane, level deck pool located in the space between the north wing and the squash courts. The two storey volume vacated by the original pool is now divided by a new floor into changing rooms and a studio theatre at the lower level, and a new music department at the upper. |
Substantial noise control measures are required to accommodate this department successfully in the heart of the building. Floating box construction eliminates sound transfer in either direction, whilst perimeter spaces borrow daylight and enjoy views through the quadrangle atrium and the new swimming pool. |
This phase of development has solved several long standing problems whilst adding further interest. |

The polarisation of UK house building between
the major private house builders and the Housing Associations
has limited our involvement in this sector to one off bespoke designs
at the upper end of the market. |
The concept design and the master planning of extensive sites have also been carried out in the context of change of use planning submissions. |
Environmental good practice informs all aspects of our approach to building design. This is particularly apparent in the residential sector where awareness of these issues has grown significantly. WHp endeavours to optimise fabric design, taking full advantage of passive techniques before technological solutions are explored. |
