The client had sufficient vision and funds to strip
the buildings back to the remaining original elements and to invest
in thorough rebuilding, using reclaimed materials. This approach
was extended beyond the shell, to the interior and the external works,
such that the whole site is now firmly-rooted in the landscape.
A swimming pool has been added, housed in a barn
structure that helps to form the main garden courtyard and high quality
soft landscaping completes the setting.
This project is successful, not because the architecture
demands attention, but as a result of careful and consistent application
of simple design principles which allow the buildings to become part
of their context. Few people will have the opportunity to appreciate
these qualities, but Whp is quietly proud of its contribution.
WHp was commissioned to transform a non descript
bungalow set in the glorious North Derbyshire countryside into a
dream retirement home.
The design combines traditional local forms and materials
with contemporary space planning to create a home that engages with
its exceptional setting without visual conflict with the surrounding
natural and built environment.
