The challenge to Whp brought new accommodation stepping
down the sloping site on three levels and forming three sides of
a courtyard around the retained reptiles glasshouses.
Optimising energy consumption, the design and construction
makes full use of passive heating and ventilation effects and utilises
wind generated power as well as reedbed waste water cleansing
The materials palette of galvanised steel frame,
profiled steel mono-pitch roofs, cedar boarding and dry-stone wall
facing is appropriate to the building function, and will quickly
weather into the wooded landscape
Internal finishes are similarly robust to cope with
practical teaching activity, with only the entrance level administrative
accommodation providing a softer feel.
Project Portfolio - HTC School Of Caring
- A Civic Trust Award Winning Building
“A thoroughly modern building, comfortable
in its mature setting through the use of traditional materials and
forms, - designed to improve with the effect of age and use.”
HTC School of Caring houses Huddersfield Technical
College’s horticulture and animal welfare courses. It is a
popular, if low profile, part of the town’s education establishment
and has grown over many years in a disparate collection of temporary
and lightweight buildings on a leafy suburban hillside overlooking
the urban centre.
